The Devil is in the Details: Common Pitfalls Specifying Commercial Boilers & Water Heaters
Presented By Kevin Brace
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 RCEP PDH(s) for Engineers

Overlooking the smallest detail in the beginning can cause huge issues later on. Join us in this one-hour course as we cover common pitfalls designers face when specifying commercial boilers and water heaters. We will review different types of installation and application errors that can cause major safety concerns.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Review combustion fundamentals and differentiate between condensing and non-condensing water heater systems
  2. Discuss how misapplication of water heaters and boilers can cause major concerns and dangerous environments for contractors and occupants
  3. Identify the end results of poor venting, including increased liability, destroyed boiler components, and potential risks to occupant safety
  4. Recall minimum combustible clearance and minimum service clearance guidelines and articulate the importance of proper service clearance for operation and safety
  5. Judge real world applications for proper venting, clearance, piping, and other processes to ensure best practices and guidelines have been followed

The Significance of the Fabricator in the Design Process: Architectural Panel Surfaces & Systems
Sponsored By CEI Materials
Presented By Chris Kimball
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

Educate the Design Team as to the key role and significance played by the Fabricator on a project. This new understanding will enable the Team to consult and involve the Fabricator early in the design process.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Summarize the key role that the Fabricator should play in the overall design process using exterior cladding. This early Fabricator involvement along with the Manufacturer and Installer, will streamline the design process, timely completion and cost effectiveness
  2. Discuss the various surface materials, their features and benefits, and how they contribute to energy performance
  3. Discuss the advantages of the standard attachment system options in developing the total wall assembly and how they work in tandem with the other components such as continuous insulation and water barriers
  4. Discuss the advantages of various attachment systems in developing the total wall assembly and how they work in tandem with other components such as continuous insulation and water barriers
  5. Explain the various code requirements including fire testing, etc.
  6. Discuss the fabrication process including design, project management, fabrication efficiencies and installation
  7. Describe the significance of manufacturing and fabricating in an environmentally responsible manner

Why Did the Waterproofing Fail?
Sponsored By Noble Company
Presented By James Medina
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 GBCI General Hour

This course evaluates the reasons that lead to failures of waterproofing installations. It examines product attributes that lead to successful installations and identifies the ways to identify necessary characteristics. Also compares installation methods and identifies ways to specify successful installations.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Review common waterproofing products, installation methods, and building code compliance.
  2. Understand the relationship of movement in the surface and substrate to waterproofing.
  3. Understand reasons for failures in waterproofing installations under tile and the relationship of failed waterproofing to durability and Sustainable Design.
  4. Understand permeation and its impact on creating suitable water and vapor barriers for tile installations and the relationship of permeation to Indoor Air Quality.
