Basic Electrified Hardware

Basic Electrified Hardware

Electrified Door Hardware. Sounds a bit scary. Door hardware is scary enough on its own but then to add electricity? Technology is advancing very rapidly. Every building has technology in it and openings need to work with that technology whether it is as simple as an automatic operator or more complex like access control. Understanding why electrified hardware is needed, what types of electrified hardware exist, and what components are required for a successful electrified opening make electrified hardware less scary. Another complexity with electrified hardware is building and fire life safety codes. There are things that must be done or not done for openings with electrified hardware to stay code compliant. Coordination is also key to a successful electrified opening. Knowing what submittals are required as well as how many different suppliers and subcontractors are involved in a single electrified opening will make openings with electrified hardware less daunting and more fun.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand when and why electrified hardware is used
  2. Recognize the types of hardware that can be electrified and which to select to maintain fire and life safety codes
  3. Discuss codes that require the use of electrified hardware
  4. Be aware of required components necessary to complete a system, including elevation and wiring diagrams, their use and make-up
