Elevate Your Outdoors: The Art of Designing Functional Living Spaces
Sponsored By Wolf Home Products
Presented By Jason Foura
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

Overview of the outdoor living space and materials used in outdoor living design. Material selection, care and design, will be discussed, and common misconceptions will be addressed.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the evolution of the outdoor living market. Discuss how new materials have longer sustainability on life cycle costs and how wood and older materials have continued to create maintenance issues and if not maintained can create safety issues with Code related materials on decking and railing.
  2. Address trends and materials used in outdoor living spaces. Trends are moving toward more Aluminum railing items. Some competitors don’t have IRC and IBC coded materials in the field.
  3. Apply standard design principles and how they relate to outdoor living spaces. Many of the design principles relate to safety because of life cycle maintenance as well as improper flashing and installation that lead to unsafe building practices.
  4. Identify and explain common misconceptions and safety issues in designing outdoor living spaces. Decking today has many options when it comes to installation and using the proper installation hardware. We review all code rulings for decking and railing.
  5. Explain proper use and care of outdoor living spaces and how to avoid them for extended performance. We review how some chemicals can harm the decking material and which products can be safely used to provide a non-toxic method to maintaining the life of your deck and rail material. Some products can react to PVC and cause issues to the capstop.

Beyond the Frame: Choosing Windows for Design and Performance Goals
Presented By Isaac Ratliff
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

This course provides a comprehensive overview of selecting the appropriate window products based on project-specific design and performance requirements. It covers various window types and their performance characteristics, examining factors such as location, building type, air and water infiltration, and design pressures.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Analyze how window function, including operation and usability, influences product selection to enhance occupant comfort and accessibility in various project applications.
  2. Examine key performance factors—air infiltration, water resistance, and structural integrity—to ensure durability, indoor air quality, and protection against environmental conditions.
  3. Identify critical code requirements such as egress, tempered glass, smoke evacuation, and energy efficiency to support safe building design and emergency preparedness.
  4. Assess aesthetic considerations, including finish options, color choices, and sightlines, to achieve both functional and design objectives.

Transforming Outdoor Community Design: The Impact of Architectural Formliners
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 GBCI General Hour

Enriching community spaces with architectural art in everyday places. Join us for this one-hour course on architectural plastic, semi-elastomeric, and urethane form liners. Taking traditionally flat, uninspired structural spaces, form liners bring immense value through cultural, historical and naturescape art possibilities.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Establish the benefits of customizable architectural form liners, establishing the contributions they make to community, culture and landscape projects.
  2. Investigate aesthetic functionality of architectural form liners including the best practices, design process and transformative artistic possibilities.
  3. Discover how architectural form liners contribute to noise reduction, end user safety and landscape and community design standards.
  4. Appraise case studies related to the architectural form liners to determine their usability in landscape design projects and specification.

Using Cable Railings in Public Buildings and Structures: A Demonstration of Strength & Beauty
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

In any building, individuals come in contact with many different building materials — concrete, wood, steel, stone, and brick — all designed and engineered for their strength, durability and functionality.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define stainless steel cable, fittings, and hardware.
  2. Implement a code-compliant cable design for the built environment.
  3. Recognize, using present-day case studies, the innovative use of stainless-steel cable, fittings, and hardware and the impact on occupant health and well being and balanced aesthetic.
  4. Explain the features of stainless-steel cable, fittings, and hardware and its use to ensure the safety of occupants.
